The new place

I realized I haven’t at all talked about the new place we’re moving into in Cambridge. It’s really beautiful, despite the crappy views (the windows look out into a restaurant and an alleyway, bleh). It’s also WAY TINIER than the place we have currently (which is a two-bedroom HOUSE). The layout is kind of odd, but the kitchen is not attached to the living room, thank god. The rooms are also TINY and weirdly laid out. Most of our furniture though is pretty tiny (loveseat, small desk, small full-size bed, etc) and it all looks quite odd in the huge house right now, so I think once we move to a smaller space things will look way better. Although, someday I would like a Real Couch. Someday.

I’ve been collecting inspiration from around the Internet for decorating the new place, and I’m going to post it here.

I really like that table and the arrangment on it. @ apartment therapy

THE COLORS! And the curtain hanging against the wall! What an awesome idea for some color. Plus it’s obligatory because they live in Back Bay in Boston. @ apartment therapy

Holy cannoli! I am not going to buy skin/fur for the floor, but the idea of maybe DIYing a solid color, asymmentrical rug is so appealing. I will have to think on this. @ ilse crawford

I wonder how hard it is to replace the blinds with solar blinds without messing with putting in new holes or whatnot. I hate mini-blinds to the ends of the earth – they’re so disgusting and they break so easily. I want to replace some of them with shades such as these to let in light without letting in the scary neighbors. @ the brick house

I really love the idea of supplanting the kitchen counters with a shelving/counter unit. I have an idea of how I could do this but I’m going to have to be really clever. (REALLY CLEVER – the kitchen is barely big enough as it is.) But we have one closet (!!!) in the entire apartment. No pantry. I need something to store food! @ door sixteen

One other thing that I want to be sure of, and I can’t find a picture of it, is lining the drawers/shelves of the storage units. It’s just such a tiny thing that I want to ensure we do, because I want everything to be clean/organized. I want there to be a place for everything so things don’t get tossed in somewhere and lost.

    Ah… I’m turning green with envy. I can’t wait until I get to move out and decorate my own place. My parents are a bit conservative… they think that me moving out when I get married is early enough -_____-;;

    1. Modern furniture for all the basics, vintage/recovery for all the accents. Same goes for color – whites and blacks for the mundane, bright colors for the accents. I like visual stimuli.

    2. Rugs turn the boring into the exciting. They are also pretty easy to clean with the tools we’ve got. So long as the rug is pretty sturdy, we can do some pretty awesome stuff.

    3. HIDE APPLIANCES. We have no space in the new kitchen, so things like bean grinders, mixers, toasters, and the like may be finding a hiding place when they are not in use. This will really make a big difference.

    4. We don’t have kids, so we can get all the fancy unsafe stuff (glass tables with sharp edges, cool-looking stuff) that would normally prove fatal to toddlers. The cats are still prone to breaking stuff, but not to getting hurt by stuff.
